How to choose a study destination that actually fits you

Choosing a study destination often starts with a ranking list. It shouldn't end there.
Start with what you can actually afford
Tuition is only part of the cost. Rent, groceries, transport, and health insurance vary enormously between cities within the same country — a "cheap" country can still have an expensive capital. Work out a realistic yearly budget before you fall in love with a specific university.
Think about what happens after graduation
Some countries make it easy to stay and work after you finish studying. Others expect you to leave within a few months. If a long-term move is part of your plan, this matters as much as the ranking of the university itself.
Climate and culture aren't superficial
You'll spend years there. A city that photographs well isn't the same as a city you'll enjoy living in through a full winter, a full exam season, and a full year away from family.
Talk to someone who has placed students before
A good counsellor has seen how the theory plays out in practice — which programmes actually deliver on their promises, and which ones look better on paper than they feel in year two.
